Eating fruits and vegetables may help some people quit smoking, a new study suggests.

In the study, smokers who ate the most fruit and vegetables were three times more likely to be tobacco-free for at least 30 days than those who ate the least amount of fruits and vegetables, the researchers said.

The results held even after the researcher?s took into account factors that could influence people?s likelihood of successfully staying away from smoking, including the participants? age, gender, race/ethnicity, education, household income and how frequently they exercised, drank heavily or used illicit drugs.

The study also found that smokers with higher fruit and vegetable consumption smoked fewer cigarettes per day, waited longer to smoke their first cigarette of the day and scored lower on a commonly-used test of nicotine dependence.

?We may have identified a new tool that can help people quit smoking,? said study researcher Jeffrey P. Haibach, a graduate research assistant at the University of Buffalo.

However, the study showed an association, and not a cause-effect link. More research is needed to confirm the findings, and identify the possible mechanisms that could explain how eating fruits and vegetables may help smokers quit.

Haibach and colleagues surveyed 1,000 smokers ages 25 and older in the United States in telephone interviews. Fourteen months later, participants were contacted again, and asked if they had abstained from tobacco use during the previous month.

To be included in the study, participants had to have smoked at least 100 cigarettes in their lifetime, and have been currently smoking daily or on some days at the study?s start.

Several explanations for the findings are possible: people who consume a lot of fruits and vegetables may be less nicotine dependent, or may have a decreased desire to smoke, the researchers said.

Fruits and vegetables are also high in fiber, which may give people a sense of satiety or fullness so that they feel less of a need to smoke. Smokers sometimes confuse hunger with an urge to smoke, Haibach said.

And unlike some foods which are known to enhance the taste of tobacco, such as meats, caffeinated beverages and alcohol, fruits and vegetables may actually worsen the taste of cigarettes, Haibach said.

The study was published May 21 in the journal Nicotine and Tobacco Research.

I don?t mean sad as in ?pathetic,? although one could certainly make that argument, too. I?m thinking ?sad? here as in heartaching.?

I'm not trying to be preachy. But really, let?s take a look at some of the news that?s come out this week about Teen Mom reality star Amber Portwood and ?Octomom? Nadya Suleman ? moms who pretty clearly fit that ?troubled? category.

Yesterday, a judge ordered that Ms. Portwood, who starred in the MTV reality television shows ?Teen Mom? and ?16 and Pregnant," serve a five year sentence for a felony drug charge. (Her sentence had been suspended on condition of finishing drug rehab, but she dropped out of the program.) Prosecutors say the now 22-year-old mother was arrested on May 24 after she failed and lied about a urine test.

Meanwhile, Octomom is publicly wavering about her new solution to strip to earn more money for those 14 children.? Celebrity news reports say Ms. Suleman had booked a gig at a Florida strip joint (where she would only have to take off her top, she insisted), but that she backed out after she felt the club owners weren?t showing her enough respect. This comes after she filmed her own porn movie (due to be released this summer), which she called the ?most liberating thing I?ve ever done.?

The Internet world and celebrity media are loving every second of these mama train wrecks, with posts, news tidbits, comments, you name it.

And it all kinda makes me want to cry.

Because, you know, both of these women have kids. They may have turned themselves into caricatures (or maybe we turned them into caricatures for our own enjoyment and ridicule), but they?re still people. And mothers. I mean, Portwood has a three-year-old daughter, whom she will for the next couple of years see primarily in a detention center waiting room. And Octomom said she got into the commercial sex industry ? however positively she spins it for the media ? because she was broke.

?If it?s a job, and it?s a well-paying job, and it?s going to allow me to get out of here and move in a safe, huge home that they [her kids] deserve, I?m going to do it,? she said.

So, we have moms with drug problems. Incarcerated parents. Impoverished women selling their bodies for money.?

It should be sad. Even more so because these are real, important, and troubling social issues that impact scores of women across the country, albeit not often in the spotlight of television cameras.

Maybe you'd think we?d use these gruesomely public examples to delve into a debate about solutions for the underlying social problems. Or maybe we could just take a look at our own lives, say a blessing for how fortunate we are, and resolve to think more of ? maybe even try to help ? the less fortunate.?

But no. We watch instead with horrified, judgmental glee.?

Maybe this is because public moms like Portwood and Suleman are outlets for all our privileged mommy angst; a release after worrying about which car seat is the best for baby, or whether we?re doing well by Junior to put him in soccer practice rather than extra art class.

It?s like the snarky media coverage of New Jersey?s Tanning Mom, Patricia Krentcil, accused of endangering her daughter by taking her into a tanning salon. (Coverage that is still as glibly nasty today, with new photos of Younger Tanning Mom, once an aspiring model, making their rounds online.)? We love to bring a Bad Mommy ? usually one lower down the socio-economic ladder, always caught in the media glare ? to a public hanging.

It shows that the rest of us might be struggling moms, but we?re not Bad.? Not like Tanning Mom. Or Octomom. Or Teen Mom.?

No, we?re Good Mommies, at least in comparison.

And because we feel self satisfied, the social problems underneath those Bad Moms? struggles can continue.??

The premise? I'm going to visit all of the sites in our Mobile Nations network over the next few months and get close and personal with each mobile platform. Android. iOS. Windows Phone. Heck, even webOS for good measure. By the time this is over I hope to be an expert on each.

My first stop is Android Central and I've armed myself with an HTC One X (in white!). I've spent a few days now getting up and running with it -- my apologies to Phil for the onslaught of newbie questions -- and over the month of June I plan to really accelerate my learning. WASHINGTON (AP) ? A prosecutor highlighted discrepancies on Thursday between Eileen McNamee's testimony in the Roger Clemens trial this week and what she told the FBI three years ago.

Eileen McNamee, the estranged wife of Clemens' chief accuser, Brian McNamee, had testified Wednesday that when she asked her husband about a FedEx box she discovered in their home, he told her it was for his protection and wasn't any of her concern. She also said he didn't mention Clemens or any other players.

But on cross-examination, prosecutor Courtney Saleski asked her about a 2009 FBI interview in which Eileen McNamee said her husband told her the contents of the box were from players.

"I don't recall," replied Eileen McNamee, a witness for the defense.

Brian McNamee testified last month that he used the FedEx box to store medical waste from an injection of Clemens in 2001, and his wife said this week she discovered it around that time.

She testified Wednesday that saw the box again two or three years later in her husband's bedroom closet and that it was open, and that she pulled out the contents and saw some vials and what appeared to be unused needles. Yet, Saleski said, Eileen McNamee had told the FBI that the box remained sealed in the house.

"I don't recall. I was very nervous. I had two FBI agents approach me after school," the teacher replied. She said she only remembered "bits and pieces" of that interview because she was shaken up.

Clemens, a seven-time Cy Young Award winner, is charged with lying when he told Congress in 2008 that he never used steroids or human growth hormone. Brian McNamee, his former strength and conditioning coach, is the only witness to claim firsthand knowledge of the pitcher using those substances.

Eileen McNamee also said she was furious with both her husband and Clemens when the former pitcher's lawyers allowed details of the McNamees' oldest son's diabetes to be revealed during a 2008 nationally televised news conference. At the news conference, Hardin played a taped phone call between the two men in which McNamee told Clemens, "My son is dying."

That wasn't true, Eileen McNamee said, although she had left her husband a message around that time about blood test results that weren't what they were supposed to be.

"Brian didn't bother to call me back. He called Roger, and told him his son was dying," she testified.

Then her 10-year-old son heard the news conference, and, "Now my son thinks he's dying."

Saleski said that Clemens could have kept the information about her son out of the news conference, but instead, "he played it for the world."

"Yes, he did," Eileen McNamee said. She acknowledged that she called her husband and told him to go after Clemens.

That morning around 3 a.m., Brian McNamee, who was not living in the house, came by to pick up the FedEx box.

"I asked him where he was going, and he said he was heading to his lawyers, and he was out the door," she recalled. Brian McNamee had testified that he decided to turn over the evidence to federal authorities against Clemens "because of what he did to my son."

On redirect questioning, Clemens lawyer Rusty Hardin asked if she knew that it was Clemens' lawyer's decision to play the tape. When the judge sustained an objection, he asked if she knew whose decision it was.

"Yes, I was told ? by you," she said.

And yet, Hardin said, she is testifying in the trial.

"Yes, because I didn't have a choice," said Eileen McNamee, who was subpoenaed to testify.

Under additional questioning from Saleski, she said that Hardin had apologized for playing the tape.

"But you're still as angry as can be at your husband?" Saleski asked. Eileen McNamee said that was true.

She also told Saleski there hadn't been any bad blood between the two men, and agreed that her husband idolized Clemens and would have done anything for him. Saleski elicited those answers to try to discredit the defense theory that Brian McNamee had a motive to fabricate evidence against Clemens.

On Wednesday, Brian McNamee had portrayed her as a shrill wife whose incessant nagging prompted him to save the medical waste he stored in the FedEx box. McNamee told the jury last month that she was worried he'd be the fall guy if there were a drug investigation and yelled at him, "You're going to go down! You're going to go down! You're going to go down!" McNamee, Clemens' strength coach at the time, said he brought the needle, swab and cotton ball from the injection home and showed it to her to reassure her.

Called to testify by Clemens' lawyers on Wednesday, Eileen McNamee seemed the antithesis of the woman described by her husband. Soft-spoken and calm, she said she didn't even know back then that her husband was injecting players with steroids and human growth hormone, or HGH.

While their accounts differ in many ways, they do dovetail in one key respect: McNamee's motive. He testified that his wife "might be right" about him being the fall guy, and he told congressional investigators in 2008 that he saved the material because of a "gut feeling" stemming from not fully trusting Clemens.

Eileen McNamee was granted immunity before her testimony because her husband linked her to transactions involving prescription drugs that could, in theory, have led to charges against her.

Caymans freeing turtle to honor British queen

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands (AP) ? A turtle farm in the Cayman Islands says it is freeing a roughly 60-year-old turtle to celebrate British Queen Elizabeth's 60 years on the throne.

Officials with the Cayman Turtle Farm say that the creature known as "Sir Thomas Turtleton" weighs more than 600 pounds (272 kilograms) and has been used to breed for more than 30 years.

The plan is to release it on Saturday in North Sound, the largest protected bay on Grand Cayman Island. Then scientists will track it by satellite.

Wisconsin recall vote to resonate in presidential race

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (Reuters) - The battle over whether to recall Wisconsin's Republican governor, Scott Walker, has sharply divided the state and become a nationally watched test of his party's push to limit government, slash spending and challenge public-sector labor unions.

Tuesday's recall vote also has the attention of two very interested outsiders: Democratic President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney, who are gearing up for their November 6 showdown for the White House.

Whatever happens when Wisconsin voters decide whether Walker should be replaced by Democrat Tom Barrett, the repercussions promise to echo deep into the presidential campaign.

At a time when national polls show Obama and Romney in a virtual tie, both sides see the wrangling in Wisconsin as a chance to organize and gain early momentum in a politically divided state that could be crucial in determining who wins the presidency.

The recall battle has raged for months, sparked by Walker's elimination last year of most collective bargaining rights for public-sector unions. That led to huge street protests in Madison, the state capital, and to the recall effort that will culminate in Tuesday's vote.

Walker's national supporters see the recall as a referendum on his take-no-prisoners brand of fiscal conservatism, and both sides in the presidential race plan to scour Tuesday's results to gauge the mood of the electorate heading into November's bigger battles.

"The vote here will definitely be seen as a harbinger of things to come," said Wisconsin-based Republican consultant Mark Graul. "The winning side will have tremendous momentum, and there will be implications far beyond Wisconsin."

Wisconsin has not backed a Republican in a presidential election since it went for Ronald Reagan in 1984, but Republicans hope a recall win will demoralize Democrats and sharply boost Romney's hopes.

Most recent polls have shown Walker ahead of Barrett, who is the mayor of Milwaukee, by about 7 percentage points in the recall election. But in a reflection of how difficult it can be to read the political tea leaves in a "swing" state such as Wisconsin, polls have shown Obama ahead of Romney by 6 to 10 points.

Obama easily captured Wisconsin by 14 percentage points in the 2008 election, when he defeated Republican John McCain. Two years later, Republicans in Wisconsin roared back to elect Walker, defeat Democratic U.S. Senator Russ Feingold and take over the state legislature.

"If the governor is successful" in warding off a recall, "it will show the mood of voters is closer to where it was in 2010 than in 2008," Graul said. "And that could portend trouble for Obama here and in other similar states, like Ohio," another Midwestern state that will be perhaps the most significant battleground in the presidential race.

'ROCK STAR FOR THE RIGHT'

Walker's bulldozing approach to cutting state budgets has made him what Barrett derisively calls "a rock star for the far right."

Walker's rising status in the Republican Party has been evident as fellow Republican governors such as Bobby Jindal of Louisiana and Chris Christie of New Jersey have appeared with him in Wisconsin.

Former President Bill Clinton, a Democrat, campaigned in Milwaukee for Barrett on Friday, attacking Walker's "divide and conquer" approach to governing and warning that Walker's conservative allies will be emboldened if he wins.

The Wisconsin recall has offered another glimpse of how unfettered spending by partisan groups outside the campaigns can drive the conversation in elections - a poignant message as such groups have begun spending what they estimate will be hundreds of millions of dollars on the presidential race.

Conservative groups such as Americans for Prosperity, funded by the billionaire conservative brothers Charles and David Koch, have poured millions of dollars into Wisconsin and plastered the state's airwaves with anti-Barrett ads. It is part of an effort to make a statement for their conservative cause - and set a tone for the presidential election.

Walker has raised $31 million to Barrett's $4.2 million, and by late April about two-thirds of Walker's 2012 donations had come from out-of-state donors, according to finance reports compiled by the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, which tracks money in state politics.

"If Governor Walker survives this, then national Republican and conservative leaders are going to see him as the spearhead for a movement," said Joe Heim, a political scientist at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Romney and Obama have avoided much involvement in the Wisconsin race, perhaps a sign that the presidential candidates are not willing to risk being tied too closely with either side.

When Romney was in Wisconsin to campaign in the state's April 3 presidential primary he called Walker a "hero." Obama endorsed Barrett in a brief statement after the May 8 Democratic primary but has said nothing publicly.

Even some Democrats think Barrett has run an ineffective, uninspiring campaign with his attack on the governor's leadership that moved beyond Walker's push for anti-union legislation.

Barrett has targeted Walker's record on creating jobs and raised questions about a criminal probe into whether Walker's aides when he was Milwaukee County executive did political fundraising on public time.

But after months of polarized battle over Walker's agenda, most Wisconsin voters seem to have made up their minds. A recent Marquette University law school poll said just 3 percent of voters remain undecided; a Democratic poll this week put the figure at 1 percent.

That makes voter turnout a potentially huge factor in the recall vote. Both sides have promised unprecedented get-out-the-vote operations.

"We've said all along this will be very close and will be decided by turnout, and we think we'll have the most effective turnout operation," Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Mike Tate said.

While Democrats have a slight edge in voter registration in Wisconsin, Republicans seem to have at least a slight edge in enthusiasm. The Marquette poll found 91 percent of Republicans were "absolutely certain" to vote, compared with 83 percent of both Democrats and independents.

'A DRY RUN'

"When I make calls, I get Republicans who are really angry this is happening. The Democrats are mad too, but I don't think they are as passionate about it," said Chris Johnson, a retired teacher who volunteers at a Walker field office in La Crosse.

Walker has opened 22 offices around the state to direct his turnout operations, and he said volunteers have made more than 2 million calls to voters - more than during his entire 2010 race.

Volunteers made more than 200,000 contacts with voters on a recent weekend day, and other Midwestern state Republican parties are setting up their own phone banks for Walker.

Volunteers with the state Democratic Party knocked on 100,000 doors that same weekend day, and labor groups also have set up their own networks of more than two dozen field offices.

The turnout operations will serve as a test run for November's presidential contest. Tate said there was significant overlap, for example, between the state Democrats' field staff and Obama's campaign.

Some Wisconsin Democrats have grumbled about the lack of support from the national party.

The Republican Governors Association was one of the biggest spenders in the race, pumping in nearly $8 million, while the Democratic National Committee only sent out a late fund-raising appeal last week.

State officials are predicting a big turnout on Tuesday, and Democrats are targeting people who voted in 2008 but not 2010. They are hoping to get 150,000 to 200,000 recall voters to the polls who did not cast a ballot in 2010 - when Walker won by about 100,000 votes.

The risk is that the losers will be demoralized after the intensity of the recall fight, making it harder to get them back to work in the campaigns for November's presidential election.

"It's very easy to burn out the average political volunteer. I'm not sure how easy it will be to get people back through the door in September," said Brian Westrate, the Republican chairman in Wisconsin's Eau Claire County. "But it will be a lot easier if we win."

Code violations have a way of popping up in paperwork. When the city records a code violation, a fee is assigned to the property, but because the violations don?t appear as a lien on a title search, it can be difficult to ascertain whether a sanction has been assessed that will delay closing.

According to Code Violation Services Inc., Windsor, Colo., violations can include the presence of garbage in a yard, maintenance issues, overgrown lawns, non-sanctioned improvements, safety issues or other dangerous items needing repair in a property.

Here are some of the most common inspection problems:

Bedrooms ? All rooms listed as bedrooms must have an operating window with 30 square inches of clearance for fire escape. Bedrooms also must have heat. If a home is listed with three bedrooms, and one does not meet both these requirements, it cannot be legally called a bedroom.

Furnaces and Compressors ? Rust in the heat exchange is a common problem that shows up on inspections. So is missing insulation where required by code at the time the house was built or improvement or replacement was installed.

Electrical ? Common electrical code violations include junctions not enclosed in a junction box, a lack of GFCI outlets in bathrooms and kitchens or reverse-polarity on outlets. These are inexpensive fixes that can hold up a sale.

Life-saving Equipment ? Smoke and carbon dioxide detectors are required by law in most states, and by not having them?or having the proper kind?it will be considered a code violation.

Plumbing ? Violations can include everything from dripping faucets to loose toilets to improper drainage.

Structural ? While these can be more expensive to fix, if they aren?t taken care of properly, they can prolong or even cancel a sale. Common code violations include rotting wood trim around windows and doors, rotten or delaminating siding and missing flashing on roofs or above windows and doors.

Extra Rooms ? Many who renovate basements or add sunrooms do so without permits. For the safety of everyone involved, be sure your improvements and additions are backed by the proper permits and resulting inspections.

Don?t hurt your sale because of code violations that can be easily fixed. Get an inspector, make the changes and enjoy the comfort your efforts bring when the closing comes to fruition.
