A day at the races ? BrownhillsBob's Brownhills Blog

Birds-eye view showing the approximate location of the Brownhills Race Course, such as it was. It would be at the Silver Street end of the Watermead development, on the old meadow. Imagery from Bing! maps. Click for a larger version.

I note today there?s been growing interest in the question of Brownhills Racecourse, such as it was. For younger readers, this wasn?t the old stadium by Chasewater which an unsuccessful trotting track, or it?s precursor, the trotting track on the site of Brownhills School?s field, oddly still marked in the current edition of the Birmingham A-Z. This ?Race Course? such as it was existed in the fields that stood where the Watermead estate is today, just off the modern Silver Street.

I don?t think this was a race course perhaps as we think of them today; I suppose, possibly it was more of a recreation ground and general purpose sports field. Remember, these were the days before universal access to the countryside, and before Brownhills really had public open space. Such a spot would be highly prized, and well used, I shouldn?t wonder. It?s no accident that it seemed to be owned for the large part by William Roberts, Brownhills top entrepreneur and philanthropist.

Peter ?Pedro? Cutler found some interesting references to this facility in the newspaper archives, which he listed in comments to the page Local Quiz 2, in conversation with David Evans:

One of the first mentions of the Dorsett dynasty in the local press in connection with the beautiful game? Nice spot by Peter Cutler, from the Lichfield Mercury of 1st May 1908. Click for a larger version.

The heading from the small article in the Lichfield Mercury of Nov 1905 is ?Brownhills Autumn Races?, with splendid weather and a large attendance. It seems an annual event since at least 1899 as there is the same title for a piece from 18 Nov 1899. The results, owners of the horses, and the Clerks and Judges are named.

Both are specific to Brownhills, I wonder if anyone can say where it was located.

There also appears to be ?Dog Racing at Brownhills? (hare coursing) at the Brownhills Racecourse. There was a competition between a dog from Bedworth and another from Nuneaton, and therefore must have been popular to surrounding owners. Also 1910?1913?

14 June 1907 there is an article about Athletic Sports on the Course. A 120 yard foot race handicap, and a one mile bicycle handicap (no mention of Brownhills Bob!).

24 Jan 1908 Pigeon shooting?

1st May 1908?.Large attendance at the Course for the football match between Brownhills Town and Shropshire LI? a Dorsett is mentioned!

The annual Wakes took place there.

No more mention after a dog event in 1913, but must have been quite a popular place. There are many personal names mentioned, just let me know if you are interested in them.

Best wishes Pedro

Being busy today, I didn?t get time to take a look, but I remembered reading about the racecourse somewhere. A frantic rattle through the bookshelf when I got home reminded me that, in the way things often are here on The Brownhills Blog, this was circular and Gerald Reece had an excellent section on the subject in his book ?Brownhills: A Walk Into History??

Gerald wrote the following:

BROWNHILLS RACECOURSE

Extract from a transcription of the Tithe Map of Brownhills kindly supplied by Gerald Reece ? more of this is a subsequent post. Click for a larger version.

At the beginning of the 19th century the large open field across the canal was a series of separate arable fields called Slang Meadow, Far Slang and Slang Croft. They were owned at that time by the Blew Family of Flint in North Wales. The naming of fields had been practised for hundreds of years and it is from these names that we can establish the ownership and location of many otherwise nondescript pieces of land. The fields were purchased by William Roberts of the Station Hotel in the 1880s and became the site of Brownhills Race Course and the venue of many other sporting and social events.

Horse-racing 100 years ago was far removed from what it is today, often not enough horses could be found. Even with fields restricted to four horses or less many ran more than once in a four race meeting. The main purpose of the event was to provide a day of escapism for the mining community. The race meeting and the annual wakes were held in the first week of November. A pleasure fair ?complete with sideshows, roundabouts, stalls, swings and other paraphernalia? attracted large crowds from the surrounding district. The main race on the card was the South Staffordshire Stakes. Ran over a distance of 1? ? miles and with a first prize of ?6 it was open to horses of 16 hands and carrying 12st 7 lbs. In 1894 it was won by John Ridley on Barbary, returning at 4/1, only three ran. John won the race again in 1896, this time riding the 3/1 shot Mrs. Sam, he beat the 6/4 on favourite Helen by a short head. Football was as popular then as it is now. Two teams used the racecourse for their home matches. They were Brownhills United F.C. who had been founded in August 1894 at the Station Hotel and a team that only played on Wednesday afternoons called the Brownhills Early Closers F.C. Brownhills Albion F. C. were based at the Hussey Arms.

Fine prizes for the best sportsmen ? and fireworks, to boot. This must have been every bit the spectacle. Clipping from ?Brownhills: A Walk into History? by Gerald Reece. Click for a larger version.

Sparrow shooting was a popular pastime, that is with everyone except the unfortunate sparrows. Live birds were caught and then released from traps to be shot at by local sportsmen. The Walsall Observer reported on one such meeting in February 1894, ?A sparrow shooting match for ?10 a side took place on Brownhills Race Course between William Gibbons of Bilston and Phillip Rathbone of Brownhills. 21 sparrows each, 11A ounce of shot, 21 yards rise and fall. Score, Gibbons 12 Rathbone 10.?

In January 1906 the same newspaper reported, ?A friendly pigeon shoot, when 110 birds from three traps fell to six guns in two hours. Also one passing seagull was brought down at a full 80 yards. Score, Guns 110.? Pigeons Nil, Seagull very unlucky.

Rabbit Coursing, a form of greyhound racing but using live rabbits became a regular event in the early 1900s.

Perhaps the most popular venue to take place on the racecourse was Pedestrianism. Athletes of the day, and sometimes of days long gone, would compete against each other in feats of endurance and speed for prize monies and often the clothes that they were wearing. Newspaper Report 1894, ?G Emery and J Geary, both of Brownhills ran 110 yards for ?10 a side. Both men were over 50 years old. Geary won. Betting on the winner, evens?. In another race C Bowman and D Hickin, both from Brownhills, ran 110 yards for ?10 a side. Both were confident and bet the gate money, pumps and drawers on the outcome. Bowman won by a foot.

The Racecourse was also a venue for the travelling shows. Touring Theatrical and Cinematographical Shows would entertain and enthral the culture seeking audience.

The Unique Role of Physical Fitness in Managing Pregnancy Stress ...

Hi there dear readers! Here is a guest post from a mother who emailed and asked me if she could post a guest article here in my blog. Of course I can't say no, since her topic is health related. Thus, this post is a beginning of my approval to any health and nurse bloggers out there who want to be a guest blogger here in my blog. Email me then, if you are interested.

?

As undeniable facts of life go, stress is one of the most potentially damaging for new moms and their growing babies. Of course, very few things in this world are all good or all bad, and stress does have some positive roles to play. The hormones produced in the body during a stressful event will heighten the awareness and speed reflexes, which make it possible to escape from dangerous situations unharmed. Exposure to pathogens initiates a physical stress response that typically results in a stronger immune system.

However, chronic stress is dangerous to the health. It may come from toxins in the food or environment, strained relationships, and even physical injuries that do not heal properly. Chronic stress has been positively correlated to heart disease, obesity, many types of cancer, and a weakened immune system. Specifically during pregnancy, chronic stress has been linked to lower birth weight, prolonged labor, complications during delivery, and a number of early childhood diseases. Fortunately, exercise offers a well-understood way to reduce the damaging effects of all types of stress.

Building Emotional and Physical Adaptability
Exercise has a number of proven benefits for pregnancy, and all women are encouraged to investigate exercise options through the many pregnancy classes now available. Increased flexibility, stronger pelvic muscles, and an optimized metabolism all contribute to reducing the experience of symptoms during pregnancy and making delivery go more smoothly.

It also helps in another, closely linked way. Exercise has been shown to reduce the experience of psychological stress. Previous studies have shown that pregnancy decreases a woman's tolerance to all forms of stress, and things that were not stressful before may suddenly become risks to the emotional and physical well-being of mom and baby. One meta-analysis of previous work in the field found sufficient evidence to substantiate the idea that physical exercise increases stress tolerance for mom and results in better health outcomes for baby.

What Are the Most Beneficial Exercises?
Generally speaking, beneficial exercises will be those that are used regularly and closely match the individual's tolerance for physical stress. Studies of exercise have consistently found there is no difference in overall benefits between water aerobics, yoga, and a daily walking routine. However, the individual's health status and fitness level have to be considered when choosing an appropriate form of exercise. During pregnancy, this means choosing a form that is lower impact and less intense than optimum forms for non-pregnant women. There is a greater need to avoid injury and over-exertion, both of which can lead to chronic stress.

A range of enjoyable exercises is the best choice, because this ensures multiple types of specific benefits and regularity. Water aerobics may be preferred by some moms, and this type will reduce symptoms like fatigue, insomnia, and digestive upset. Water aerobics can even be used to tone muscles, but it will not help in strengthening the bones. Mixing low- and no-impact aerobics with resistance training and pregnancy-specific exercises for toning the pelvic muscles is an optimum recipe for decreasing pregnancy stress.

?

Working with a doctor, a mother can develop an appropriate exercise plan to better reduced her stress levels and keep her physically healthy. Planning for delivery with her doctor, learning more about standard procedures, like pain medicines available, and optional procedures, like umbilical cord blood banking, will help a mother go to the delivery room solely focused on delivery of a healthy baby without the worry of the details.

How would you change Samsung's Galaxy Player 4.0?

Image

Samsung's sub-$200 Galaxy Player offers up PMP-stylings inside a smartphone shell. When our reviewer put it through its paces, we couldn't find much to commend it -- with poor sound quality and battery life that wouldn't manage a long-haul flight. The expandable storage and removable battery made it more desirable than the equivalent iPod touch, but given that it was retailing for $20 more (at the time), we'd have said go for a GoGear or D3 instead. But we suspect that despite our advice, some of you bought one, so tell us how you've found it on a daily basis and what should the company do when it comes time for a refresh?

Our Trip to Donate to Our Local Animal Shelter #ILoveMyK9

If you've read this blog at all over the last two months, you know we adopted a dog (Roofus) from a local Humane Society Shelter. ?I was actually not too excited about adopting a shelter dog - I was leaning more toward buying a puppy from a breeder. ?I mistakenly thought that all of the dogs in shelters were either very old or problem dogs.

I couldn't have been more wrong!

Not only did we get an exceptionally loving and calm (as in really mellow) sweet dog under two years old, he came already potty trained and knowing a lot of basic commands such as sit and stay. ?Most of the other dogs in the shelter were puppies (so there goes that idea of old dogs - I think we only saw one or two over 4 years old) and none would be described as "problem" dogs. Our shelter even color codes them by personality so that you can get a dog that best matches your family's style.

I've always know the issues surrounding puppy mills and would never buy a dog from a pet store, but since our shelter experience, I have really come to respect what a wonderful service our local?Humane?Society Shelters offer. ?LJ has already announced that he'd like to volunteer there when he is old enough to be a dog walker.

When LJ and I were given the?opportunity?to donate some Del Monte dog treats to a worthy cause, we knew right away we wanted to give them to the shelter where we got Roofus. ?We were able to look up what they needed on their wish list and saw they were in need of treats for training and rewards. ?No wonder Roofus has such a love of Pup-Peroni, Milo's Homestyle Treats, and Milkbone treats - that what he got at the shelter!

LJ and I headed?off to Walmart to pick up some supplies?to donate to the shelter together.

LJ very carefully picked out the varieties of Pup-Peroni he thought the dogs would like best.

The Milo's Homestyle Treats stumped him a bit since there were so many difference choices!

He wound up grabbing one of each!

I had really wanted to make a nice cute gift basket, but we were able to get so many treats with Walmart's low prices that they wouldn't fit in the basket. Add in the two bags of dog food and we needed a box!!

The shelter we were headed to is about 40 minutes away, so we all loaded into the car and set off for our road trip.

We were so impressed that the ladies at the shelter remembered Roofus. ?

They were so happy to see him doing well!

It was a good thing that this little guy was already spoken for - LJ and I were both tempted to bring him home with us!!

I encourage you to look at your local shelter before purchasing a dog or puppy from somewhere else. There are so many beautiful, loving dogs who need a good home. If you are able to support your local shelter with a cash or goods donation, they will be most grateful for any help they receive!

Rugby Union: Thomas has Wales belief

Former Wales captain Gareth Thomas feels the current crop of Welsh stars have what it takes to finally beat Australia away from home.

The Six Nations champions are set to embark on a daunting trip Down Under to face the Wallabies in three Tests.
The men in red will play the two-time world champions in Brisbane on Saturday, June 9, before a clash with ACT's state side, the Brumbies, on Tuesday, June 12.
The players then return to international duty for the second Test on June 16 in Melbourne before the concluding Test takes place in Sydney on June 23.
Wales have never beaten Australia in a series Down Under but head into the tour having claimed the Grand Slam and been one of the teams to come out of last year's World Cup with credit.
They finished fourth at the World Cup and Thomas, who retired from rugby union in 2007, believes the players deserve to be confident ahead of the trip to face one of the powerhouses of world rugby.
"Having the feeling of invincibility is deserved because they've beaten everyone in their path by winning the Grand Slam," he said. "I don't think you can knock the boys for being like that.
"But when you talk to them or when you're around them they're actually an honest, decent bunch of people. So I don't think in any way they'll be arrogant about it."
Thomas knows that it will not be easy to get a win on the board against the green and gold stars but he feels that there is a belief in the present side that they can finally do what so many touring sides have failed to achieve.
"Everyone's waiting with bated breath to see if we can overcome the one hurdle that has seemed to have always been our downfall," he added to Wales Online. "We've won Grand Slams or done well in the past, but then never been able to back it up by going to the southern hemisphere and being successful.
"And I think people believe in this team, believe in Sam Warburton as the captain and so many other players there and I'd love to see them carrying on this mentality."

Google's Project Glass... it's spreading

Now, we're not saying Google's elite are actually aliens managing human social affairs, but if you were our reader Ben who ran into a crew of Project Glass-equipped Googlers breaking for drinks at a Los Gatos wine bar, it might seem like a possibility. Beyond filing tons of paperwork, the team is clearly expanding quickly and most recently took part in the Google+ photographer's conference to show off what POV pictures and video (even if that's most of the functionality so far) could add to the world of photography. They wouldn't let Ben try on a pair, but Vic Gundotra reiterated that it was positioned as not to interfere with conversations, and make images appear to be floating in front of your eye. There's video of the photography presentation after the break (jump to about 45 minutes for the first person pics), as well as a few more pictures on Google+, but we'd keep a pair of special black sunglasses and bubblegum handy just in case. In addition to these candid snaps, some sample video footage, taken with the glasses has popped up on Google+, also after the brek.

[Thanks, Ben]

ABOUT CISCO CAPITAL

Cisco Capital, part of Cisco Systems, specializes in financing networks by providing innovative, flexible financial programs to Cisco customers and channel partners worldwide. As part of Cisco's total solution, Cisco Capital helps channel partners to manage cash flow, grow sales and increase profitability, while offering attractive, flexible and short-term financing solutions that make it possible for customers to obtain higher credit lines and longer and more flexible terms that ultimately help them build stronger and healthier businesses.

Cisco Systems is helping countries in emerging and advanaced markets modernize their economies to become leaders in the Internet age. These technologies are helping to kick start economies, whether they are faster broadband services, intelligent electricity grids, computing power optimised and securely "rented from the cloud", smart buildings or next generation video conference and collaboration tools run over the network. It is critical that public and private organisations have access to competitive financing to enable investment in the latest technology to grow and meet new opportunities as the global economy recovers.

"With everything that's going on in the economy, how customers are going to pay for their acquisition is front and center now. It's a big part of the decision-making, and everything that happened ... we went through the credit market sort of seizing," said Maryann Von Seggern, director of worldwide channel development at Cisco Capital. Gaining credit for IT investments through banks has become a more difficult chore as the banks have become much less giving when it comes to credit: the credit crunch has sucked up big-bank-provided liquidity. But for Cisco Capital the financing business has been bouyant.

Financing options can not only make deals happen that may not have come together without the aid of credit, but it also tends to increase deal sizes by an average of 30 per cent. Cisco Capital is an increasingly integral part of Cisco's overall business play.

Well, that was a, uh, no-brainer. As Cannes winds down, its numerous awards start getting doled out -- and the most notable win so far comes for Pablo Larrain's critics' darling "No," which has just taken the Art Cinema Award, the top prize in the festival's Directors' Fortnight sidebar.

The film, a riveting political campaign drama starring Gael Garcia Bernal, was the obvious favorite for the award from its first screening way back on the third day of the festival, where it received rapturous applause and prompted many to ask why it wasn't in a higher-profile strand of the festival. Since then, it's had pretty much a dream festival run: reviews were glowing across the board, while word of mouth spread rapidly from that first screening, inspiring many more Competition-focused critics to give it some column inches.

Most thrillingly, US art-film powerhouse Sony Pictures Classics acquired the distribution rights a few days ago, assuring it a wider release than any of Larrain's previous films and significantly upping its chances of Oscar attention -- providing, of course, that Chile submits it to the Academy. All in all, a spectacular outcome for a film that might not have gotten its due in Competition -- though you can bet the selectors won't be caught napping the next time Larrain brings a film their way.

I haven't been able to dig into Directors' Fortnight as much as I'd have liked to this year, though I understand from colleagues that it was a stronger-than-average lineup. Still, nothing has eclipsed "No" as the breakout story of this year's festival sidebars, so the award feels appropriate. The film remains one of my two favorites of the entire festival -- if you'll forgive the smugness, I'm pleased I listed it as one of my five most anticipated titles before Cannes kicked off. ?

In other awards news, veteran Algerian director Merzak Allouache's "The Repentant," a reportedly deeply moving drama about Islamic fundamentalism, won the Best European Film prize in Directors' Fortnight. (Before you complain that Algeria isn't in Europe, it's a French production.) Cannes regular Nuri Bilge Ceylan took the Fortnight's Carosse d'Or award, a career achievement prize of sorts.

Meanwhile, over in the Critics' Week sidebar -- far less talked-about than the Fortnight this year, largely due to the prevalence of first-time filmmakers in its lineup -- Spanish emigration drama "Here and There," about a Mexican migrant worker returning home after many years in the US, took the Grand Prize, which went to Jeff Nichols's "Take Shelter" last year.

Lesser awards in the same strand went to "Sofia's Last Ambulance," a comic documentary about paramedics in the Bulgarian capital, Israeli theological thriller "God's Neighbours" and Argentinian juvenile-delinquent drama "The Wild Ones."

Alibaba.com $2.5B privatization bid approved

(AP) ? Chinese e-commerce firm Alibaba Group's $2.5 billion bid to take its Hong Kong-listed unit private was cleared Friday by minority shareholders, easing the way for CEO Jack Ma to gain more control over his company's destiny.

The approval comes less than a week after Alibaba Group said it was buying back roughly half of struggling U.S. Internet company Yahoo's stake for $7.1 billion, as the Chinese company starts to extricate itself from a relationship that has grown strained over the years.

About 95 percent of Alibaba.com minority shareholders voted at a special meeting to approve Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.'s offer to buy back the 27 percent of Alibaba.com Ltd. that it doesn't own for 13.50 Hong Kong dollars a share. That's the same price at which the company went public in 2007.

The offer could cost up to HK$19.6 billion ($2.5 billion).

Alibaba.com, a business-to-business website, has said that going private will allow it to restructure and make long-term strategic decisions as growth slows after years of rapid expansion without pressure from shareholders worried about the depressed stock price.

The company plans to improve the quality of its site to attract more manufacturers, wholesalers and trading companies paying to use it. The number of users has started dropping and Alibaba says reversing that decline could hurt financial results.

Hangzhou, China-based Alibaba Group also operates Taobao.com, China's version of eBay, and TMall, which brand owners can use to sell directly to consumers. Alibaba also runs a search engine for shoppers and an online payment service.

Green Blog: On the Horizon, a Northern Lights Extravaganza

The photographer Ole C. Salomonsen first saw the northern lights while growing up in the northern Norwegian city of Tromso, where the best time to see them is in the cold winter months.

?When I was a child, my parents and my grandparents would tell me that if you wave at the northern lights for too long, they will come after you,? he said.

Today Mr. Salomonsen chases auroras for a living, spending countless sleepless nights waiting to capture them so he can share them with the rest of the world. Right now he?s excited about a phenomenon called the solar maximum, when the sun?s activity is so high that it causes auroras to appear more often and in places where they usually don?t occur. The next solar maximum is expected in 2013, and to call attention to it, he recently released a stop-motion video called ?Celestial Lights.?

?I want to make people aware that the sun will cause faster and more aggressive auroras,? Mr. Salomonsen said. ?More people will be able to witness the northern lights, not just those of us up north.?

The northern lights, or aurora borealis, occur when the earth?s atmosphere comes into contact with particles from the sun. The earth?s magnetic field then drives these particles toward the North and South poles, which is why the northern lights are normally seen in places like Alaska, Canada and northern Europe.

But every 11 years, the northern lights can be seen farther south, in places like England or the United States, when the sun reaches its most active phase. At this point of the solar cycle, the north and south poles of the sun flip, and more sunspots and flares occur. NASA scientists predict that the sun will hit solar maximum next year.

Mr. Salomonsen?s video opens with an ominous musical score composed by Kai-Anders Ryan as the camera homes in on a tumultuous sun and its lunging flares.

?I included the solar maximum to put some story to it, to show the eruption of the sun as the source of the northern lights,? the photographer said. ?The sun is getting angrier, so the auroras are getting angrier and more dramatic.?

From October to March, Mr. Salomonsen spent many nights shooting more than 150,000 stills of auroras soaring above Scandinavian mountains and valleys. About 6,000 of these stills went into the production of ?Celestial Lights.?

Hunting for auroras isn?t easy. Before heading out, he checks the weather forecast and a university Web site that monitors the earth?s geomagnetic activity, which can predict the level of solar activity on a given night. If there are clear skies and indications of high solar activity, he bundles up, packs some coffee and prepares for a long night of driving and waiting in the dark.

With the video, his main challenge was to show the auroras moving as close to their actual speeds as possible.

While some auroras move as fast as lightning, that is not the norm, Mr. Salomonsen said. ?Many tourists who come to see the northern lights get disappointed because they think that?s how auroras move,? he said. ?They can move fast, but most of the time, they move very slowly and majestically.?

Although Mr. Salomonsen has been shooting auroras for many years, he did not seriously pursue photography until 2007, when he left his job as an equity broker and started his business, Arctic Light Photo. His work, particularly his two aurora videos, has gathered a wide following: ?Celestial Lights? has been viewed 279,000 times in the last month.

Still, he believes the auroras are best appreciated when people venture out and see them for themselves. Although they are present year-round, they are most visible in Norway from December to early February.

?No matter how good a photo or video is, you could never use that to justify not seeing the auroras with your own eyes, if you are lucky enough to get the chance,? he said.

JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) ? Carrying small American flags and wearing T-shirts bearing the names of friends and loved ones who died when a massive tornado tore through Joplin one year ago, thousands of people made a somber march Tuesday through some of the town's hardest-hit neighborhoods.

Residents and officials are dedicated to remembering their losses but are also committed to what is certain to be a long, slow recovery from a tornado that killed 161 people and injured hundreds of others. The storm last May wiped away entire neighborhoods in the city of 50,000, destroyed Joplin's only public high school and left behind a ghastly moonscape of block after city block of foundations wiped clean of their structures.

"It's been a roller-coaster type year. Extremely high highs and lots of low lows," said Debbie Fort, the principal of Erving Elementary School, which has been operating out of temporary facilities.

"It's important that we take a moment to reflect and remember," she said. "But it's a new chapter in our lives. This really signifies our future, the future of Joplin."

Signs of the challenges ahead were plentiful on the 4-mile "Walk of Unity," from the glaring absence of century-old trees in the city's central neighborhoods to the ghostly shell of St. John's Regional Medical Center, which formed a stark backdrop at a late afternoon memorial service marked by a moment of silence at 5:41 pm. ? the exact time the tornado hit.

"There is not a handbook out there that says, 'Here's how you develop a community that has an 8-mile-long, 25 to 30 city-block wide swath of area that has basically lost everything,'" said David Wallace, a Texas developer whose firm was hired by the city to oversee Joplin's rebuilding plan. He estimated the recovery will cost nearly $2 billion, about half of which has already been pledged by private sources.

Throughout the day, residents, hospital workers, volunteers and politicians gathered across the disaster zone to mark the May 22, 2011, tornado, mixing somber remembrances with steely resolutions to rebuild.

"It is so fitting to begin this day, this anniversary, by reflecting on our faith as dawn breaks over a renewed Joplin," Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon said at a sunrise service at Freeman Hospital, which is eight blocks from St. John's but was undamaged. "Scripture tells us that the path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining ever brighter till the full light of day."

The afternoon procession started in neighboring Duquesne, where more than one-fourth of the community's 750 homes were destroyed and nine people died. The Joplin portion of the walk began past a Wal-Mart where three people were killed and 200 survived by huddling together in employee break rooms, bathrooms and other designated safe zones.

City officials estimated the number of people who took the somber walk at 5,000 to 6,000. They ended at Cunningham Park, which has been rebuilt and is across the street from what is left of the St. John's hospital.

The medical center hasn't yet been torn down because it sits atop the mining tunnels that made Joplin an early 20th century boomtown. The hospital has been operating out of a succession of temporary facilities while construction continues at its new permanent location, where it will reopen under the name Mercy Hospital Joplin.

Along the route, some residents sat in lawn chairs and beneath shade umbrellas outside their partially rebuilt homes, offering bottled water to the walkers.

The unity walk featured several stops, including a groundbreaking ceremony for the rebuilt Joplin High. Juniors and seniors will spend the next two years attending school in a converted department store in the city's sole shopping mall.

"The sound of hammers has replaced the sound of sirens," said C.J. Huff, Joplin's school superintendent.

A community theater where three people died after a Sunday matinee performance will be rebuilt nearby. Those on the walk included former co-workers of Randy Mell, a 49-year-old Jasper County custodian who died while trying to save some of the more than 50 audience and cast members trapped inside the Stained Glass Theater.

Insurance policies are expected to cover most of the $2.8 billion in damage from the storm. But taxpayers could supply about $500 million in federal and state disaster aid, low-interest loans and local bonds backed by higher taxes. Almost one-fifth of that money was paid to contractors who hauled off an estimated 3 million cubic yards of debris.

In January, elected officials and other members of a 45-person recovery committee endorsed a long-term recovery plan that calls for the creation of four new business districts that would allow residents to live and shop nearby and a unified approach to rebuilding that ensures new construction meets certain design standards.

In March, the city hired Wallace Bajjali Development Partners, of Sugar Land, Texas, as its "master developer" to oversee the rebuilding plan. Wallace, the company's chief executive officer, said he's secured commitments from builders who want to bring a minor league baseball stadium, a convention center and a public performing arts center to the city near the borders of Arkansas, Oklahoma and Kansas. One interested developer is a group led by former Dallas Cowboys star Emmitt Smith that envisions transforming Joplin's Main Street business corridor into a mixed-use neighborhood with high-end lofts built atop retail space.

"Everybody's heart in America is pouring out to Joplin right now," he said. "There's a desire to be able to come and make a difference in this community."
