Military intervention in Syria 'possible' - Russian experts: Voice of ...

Expert on the Middle East, Viktor Nadein-Rayevsky, told the Voice of Russia that the intervention could be staged in a way to look like the opposition?s offensive with foreign mercenaries taking part in the operation.

There is also a risk that Turkey and some other countries bordering Syria could get involved in the conflict, the expert said, citing Ankara`s plans to deploy Patriot missiles on its border.

?Constructive negotiations is the only way to settle the crisis?, he said.

Obesity, health, and fitness: some odd connections ? Fit, Feminist ...

?According to a recent study funded by the Canadian Institute for Health Research, people who are obese are less likely to die from pneumonia than people of normal or low weight. The study of patients at six Edmonton hospitals found that obese patients were 56-per-cent less likely to die, an example of what the researchers call ?reverse epidemiology.?

It is far from the only example. The authors cite studies that reveal paradoxical outcomes for obese patients suffering from coronary artery disease, end-stage kidney disease and heart failure.

Other recent CIHR-funded studies have revealed that some obese people appear to be protected against the very illnesses most associated with obesity, specifically type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

These seemingly contradictory findings are fuelling research into the so-called Obesity Paradox, according to CIHR researcher Antony Karelis at the University of Quebec.

Karelis has found that about 30 per cent of obese people appear to display metabolic health indistinguishable from those of young lean individuals, including normal blood pressure, low levels of bad fats, high levels of healthy fats, high insulin sensitivity and low inflammation.

Metabolically healthy obese (MHO) adults also have less fat in their livers, muscles and around their vital organs, but more subcutaneous fat under their skin, he said.

?Some [obese] people collect fat under their skin where it is less likely to go into the liver and the heart or the pancreas and cause all kinds of trouble,? said Karelis. ?Fat on their thighs is associated with health benefits, but abdominal fat is more associated with [poor health].?

Karelis argues that identifying people by their metabolic health, rather than their weight, is key for doctors making decisions about how to treat their patients.

?We know these people exist and that they have a lower risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease,? Karelis said. ?They have a better inflammation profile, a better hormonal profile and they are physically stronger.?

There are signs that weight loss may be harmful to people who are metabolically healthy but obese.

MHO individuals who participated in a six-month weight-loss study showed deteriorated insulin sensitivity, a risk factor for diabetes and heart disease. Metabolically abnormal obese study participants ? those who display inflammation and unhealthy fat profiles usually associated with obesity ? showed improved insulin sensitivity, suggesting their health could benefit from weight loss.

A 2009 study in the journal Epidemiology of middle- and older-aged obese adults found an increased risk of death associated with weight loss. Another CIHR study found that weight loss in obese post-menopausal women increased their risk of developing diabetes.?

Since diabetes seems to be the main risk caused by messing with a good thing, i.e. losing weight when you?re metabolically healthy to start, I think I?ll keep on eye on this in my case if I make progress to a leaner me by year 50. We?ve got a type 2 diabetic in the house so monitoring my blood sugar at least is easy.

Turnout for Apple's iPad mini in mainland China is minimal

Beijing Wangfujing Street Apple Store before it opened

Beijing Wangfujing Street Apple Store before it opened in October

FORTUNE -- If it wants excitement at its Chinese launch events, Apple (AAPL) may need to rethink the reservation-only system it put in place last January after a dangerous mob?forced it to halt sales of the iPhone 4S in Beijing before they began.

IDG News' Michael Kan reports that turnout for the iPad mini that arrived in mainland China Friday was "nearly nonexistent." There wasn't even the hint of a queue in front of Apple's?newest retail palace in Beijing's famous?Wangfujing Street shopping district, where hundreds gathered on opening day for a chance to take home an Apple T-shirt.

It wasn't clear from Kan's reporting whether it was Apple's reservation system or lack of enthusiasm for the new iPad that kept the crowds away. Presumably there'll be more interest in the iPhone 5 that arrives next Friday.

Business Insider ranks Sandusky Scandal Biggest PR Fail 2012 ...

Despite the breaking news of the Sandusky scandal occuring in 2011,?Business Insider?has ranked the Penn State administration?s cover up as the biggest Public Relations fail of 2012.

On a list that mentions Apple Maps, American Apparel, and four of the most popular fast food chains in America, reporter Laura Stampler gives several reasons as to why the scandal ranks the highest.

First, she mentions the release of the Freeh Report?over the summer?which claimed Joe Paterno and the Penn State administration participated in concealing information regarding the multiple acts of child abuse by Jerry Sandusky. This led to the pulling of university sponsers like?State Farm.

With the Freeh investigation, as well as the hiring of PR firms like Edelman and La Torre Communications, the total amount spent on internal investigation and crisis management was a staggering?$9,972,854.?Penn State currently spends over $200,000 a month on public relations.

Sandusky Scandal - On November 5, 2011, a 23-page Grand Jury report rocked Penn State to its foundation. As a result of Jerry Sandusky being convicted on 45 of 48 counts sexual abuse against 10 minors and subsequent fallout and alleged coverup by several key school administrators and legendary coach Joe Paterno, these events will forever be a dark stain in the history of our University. How to think outside of the ?gift box? at Christmas. | Austin Catholic ...

Advent

The other day, I was kindly asked what my children would like for Christmas. So, I surveyed their bedrooms, looked through their toy bins and took stock of their clothes and shoes. But I came up totally empty.

My husband is an unabashed geek and being technologically savvy is the bread and butter of our existence, but we try to keep our kids as unplugged as possible. ?So they don?t have hand held devices or even the Wii, and the little screen time they are permitted is more than slightly policed. ?Scratch out video games, for the time being anyway.?Feeling a bit lost, I sat down with a catalog that came in the mail, and tried to narrow down a few things. But I couldn?t run away from the vision of the lego debris all over the floor (that never seems to subside in our house), and the matchbox cars that I find under the piano and in my purse on any given day, and the stacks of old board games which no one seems to have the time to play. ?Stacks + Piles + Debris = dusty garage sale items. Eeek. Scratch that.

Then I began thinking along the lines of practical things, like fishing gear, a tool box, a telescope or an archery set. But those require time to acquire a certain skill, time which is hard to find at this stage of our parenthood.?

The only thing that makes sense to me is books, since we love to read with our children and reading is my favorite way to spend time with them. If I had to ask for anything, books are the clear winner (cue the confetti!)

But stuff? No, we don?t need any more stuff. ?Recently we were generously given ?by family some great new board games, puzzles and a few fantastic movies. I will wrap those up, with some new shoes that I bought for the boys. ?My hubby is launching some secret backyard project, and maybe this will be the year we will get that bike trailer so we can take family bike rides. And we will be thankful!

We are a country of blessed abundance, but that can turn into a culture which makes us feel like we are depriving our children, and ourselves, if we are not showered with gifts at Christmas. It is way too easy to get caught up in the commercialism of giving store-bought presents instead of adoring Christ?s holy presence. It can turn into a fanatical frenzy of trying to find the ?perfect thing? for everyone, when really the ?perfect thing? is simply to spend time as a family worshipping our Lord and sharing loving acts of service with our community.

In the spirit of St. Nicholas? generosity on his feast day today, why not challenge our families to do something a little different this year. ?Children are hungry for meaningful experiences, and really benefit from family growth opportunities. These are lessons that might shape their future careers and families. ?Here are some ideas of how we can think outside of the box with gifts we can bring to Jesus and to each other this year.?

Gifts of Service

  • Buy gifts for needy children through the Angel Tree project at the parish. You can also volunteer to help wrap those gifts as a family, or deliver them to homes.
  • Visit a hospital, or the elderly at a nursing home as a family or offer to serve a meal at the nursing home close to your home or a soup kitchen. Our family sings Christmas carols at our local nursing home, and it?s a beautiful way to share the love of Christ on His birthday. ?Many are lonely and without family on Christmas Day.
  • Sign up to deliver Christmas dinner to the needy, or have your children help you stuff grocery bags to deliver to a nearby food bank.

Gifts of Worship and Prayer

If you?d like to do spend your money in a way which can bless a family or community, there are numerous non-profit organizations which devote themselves to breaking the cycle of poverty in underdeveloped nations in very innovative and effective ways. These are a few of my favorite organizations. You will be amazed what a few simple U.S. dollars can do for a family across the world.

  • Work of Human Hands Sale sponsored by Catholic Relief Services? Purchase Christmas beautiful handcrafted gifts by artisans from impoverished nations. The money you spend goes directly to the person who made your gifts! Also, you can even set a sale up in your own parish! Visit www.greatergift.org website.
  • Heifer Ranch International ? End world hunger by buying a chicken, or a rabbit, a tree or a cow for a whole village to share. For just a few dollars, you could help feed a whole community of people, who will then be able to save their wages to send their children to grade school and eventually college. http://www.heifer.org/
  • Christian Foundation for Children and Aging ? Catholic organization for sponsoring children ?and the elderly http://www.cfcausa.org/
  • Make a donation to Catholic Relief Services to help bring aid to people facing true crisis, here in the States and across the world, such as those still recovering from the effects of Hurricane Sandy. (www.crs.org)

Peace be with us all at the beginning of this Advent season. As we prepare our hearts to enter the mystery, let us all be inspired to believe that our prayers and our actions can make small miracles happen that may ripple throughout the world at Christmas, and continue in the New Year. Let us give ourselves permission to quietly step back from the frenzy, and invite others to follow us, because we have something far more important to be doing.

Let us look to the manger for the greatest gift of all and remember what He asks of us. Love, and more love.?

And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.? ~ John 1:14
