Aluminium Window Painting Guide
Contrary to popular belief, painting old aluminium window is not a hard task and can be done quite easily provided one follows a few simple steps.
However, the time one might need in order to prepare for the painting procedure completely depends on the condition of the window that is in need of painting. For example, anodized aluminium windows need their surfaces to undergo a lot of mechanical abrasion before the painting can start, and therefore requires more preparation time. When one paints particular areas, it is very important to first protect the surrounding areas. This can be done with plastic drop sheets and canvas drop sheets. But before one can actually begin painting, one has to ensure that the surfaces are absolutely clean and free of any kind of dirt particles. This can be done with soap water and sponge. The next important step is to sand the substrate and this is quite a painstaking process but promises a perfect paint job if well done. One must choose the grit of the sand paper depending on the surface that has to be sanded.
Once the sanding is done, one can start with the painting process but it is always a good idea to give the window a last solvent wash before starting off. The painting should be done in three coats ? the first coat will be of a primer sealer light coat, the second coat is the first top coat and the third coat is the second top coat. It is always best to opt for oil based enamel or two pac poly urethane paints when painting aluminium windows. But one must remember that using two pac paints are a little tricky and needs prior experience in handling. When using oil based enamel paints, one must always use good quality brushes when painting. Though this might seem to be a trivial detail, the quality of the paint brush actually has a big role to play in the quality of the end product. For two pac paints, one should use a HVLP spray gun for application because this ensures a perfect finish.
